Learn how you can improve sensitive skin using CBD.

Sensitive or reactive skin can be difficult to identify and it is known by all that its appearance is increasing more and more in society, due to different factors, among them, pollution. In this blog post we will explain the multiple benefits of the CBD to reduce the reactivity of the sensitive skin and improve the quality of life of people who suffer from it.

CBD FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

What is sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is any type of skin: dry, oily or combination skin that reacts excessively, more strongly or more quickly to an external or internal factor that is generally well tolerated by normal skin.
Sensitive skin can manifest itself in various ways:

Endogenous factors: unique and own factors

- PhototypePhototypes I and II are white and thin skin types that redden easily and are more prone to sensitive skin.
- Existence of some pathologys: skin conditions such as seborrhoeic dermatitis, acne, rosacea, couperose, etc.
- Anxiety and depression

Exogenous factors: External factors

- Inappropriate cosmetics:  incorrect care and cleaning products. Peeling or laser intervention can cause the skin to react quickly to the skin's reaction.
- Environmental factorscold, sun, wind, which generate immediate reactions
- Way of Life: food, alcohol, stress

Do you know the difference between sensitive skin and sensitised skin?

Sensitive skinSensitive skin is considered to be skin that reddens easily and is irritated and itchy. It is an altered and very fragile skin in the face of external aggressions such as pollution, sudden changes in temperature, an inadequate diet, lack of sleep, fatigue, and other factors associated with emotional and psychological state such as stress, anxiety, depression, etc.

Sometimes this sensitivity is exaggerated, the skin is not soothed by any of the moisturising products normally used. It cannot tolerate anything and becomes allergic as a result.

On the other hand, the skin may be sensitised  and not having any dermatological pathology, being a characteristic that is associated with alterations, stimuli produced by certain intolerances to daily hygiene products that stimulate and produce real allergies and are responsible for the appearance of eczema or urticaria.

Who is affected?

Having sensitive skin is really common, but it's not always easy!affects 1/3 of the adult population!

The women's 60% suffer from this condition to a greater extent than men, who account for 40 %. For genetic reasons, some skins are more predisposed to sensitivity than others. We tend to see this predisposition in fair skin, although skin colour has nothing to do with the degree of sensitivity. The frequency with which this problem occurs shows, however, a tendency to decrease with age.

Sensitive skin can also be a clinical manifestation of a pathology of the face, such as rosacea, eczema or seborrhoeic dermatitis, for example.

Having sensitive skin has no psychological consequences, although it does mean that certain moments in life can be altered due to this type of reaction. Dealing with other dermatological pathologies in addition to sensitive skin can be more complicated, as it is easy for prescribed treatments to be poorly tolerated by our skin.

How could CBD benefit sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin, also known as reactive skin, often causes uncomfortable sensations. For example, stiffness, prickling, itching or tightness. These symptoms are sometimes associated with dryness and redness. It is also worth mentioning that all skin types, whether oily, combination or dry, can become sensitive.

In this respect, the CBD may calm skin reactivity. That is, to reduce redness, roughness and dullness. In addition, it is suggested that its soothing and dermal balancing properties may reduce the inconvenience associated with skin sensitivity.

CBD and the skin

CBD: Benefits it could have on different skin conditions.

Scientific research suggests that CBD oil may be useful in treating various skin conditions.

Antibacterial and antifungal properties

Research into the antibacterial properties of CBD began in 2008. In fact, the first studies carried out in culture plates proved that some of the compounds of the "cannabis sativa" plant, such as CBD, directly eliminated certain pathogenic bacteria. This first study opened the door to the use of cannabidiol as an antibacterial agent. Subsequently, other researchers conducted studies in which CBD was shown to be as effective against bacteria as traditional medicines.

As if this were not enough, studies on the use of CBD were extended to these resistant bacteria; in this regard, the study carried out by Australian researcher Mark Blaskovich of the University of Queensland, who studied the use of CBD against bacteria such as Staphylococcus Aureus (bacteria resistant to antibiotics), Streptococcus Pneumoniae (which causes pneumonia) and Enterococcus faecalis (which mainly affects immunosuppressed people and can cause a fatal outcome), stands out.

The results of this important study were presented at the 2019 American Society for Microbiology annual conference in San Francisco and can be summarised as follows:

CBD has been shown to have strong antibacterial activity for up to 20 days. The scientific community estimates that bacteria can survive commonly used antibiotics for a period of time. -Cannabidiol has been shown to be effective primarily for topical use, i.e. on the surface of the skin.

Anti-inflammatory and soothing properties

Our body contains what is called the endocannabinoid system. This system has many different functions that we are not going to cover in this article, because it would take too much time.

The few things I will mention about it is that it is made up of a number of different cannabinoid receptors. They are known as cannabinoid receptors CB1 y CB2.

These receptors are found throughout the body, including in immune cells within the immune system, and even in the central nervous system and the immune system. skin. Immune cells that are part of the immune system find their way to an area of our body that has been damaged and actually cause inflammation to protect and heal the area.

Cannabinoids, such as CBD, can regulate (both directly and indirectly) these receptors to assist in a number of different responses. For example, CBD binds indirectly to receptors, while THC binds directly.

One of these responses is in the form of anti-inflammatory effects that can relieve chronic inflammation in certain parts of the body. This is why the use of CBD to alleviate skin conditions such as acne or psoriasis is so popular today.

In 2019, a study investigated the therapeutic effects of using a CBD ointment on participants with chronic and severe skin conditions. These included people with psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and resulting scarring. As a result, topical CBD therapy was found to have significantly improved the participants' skin.

Additionally, in 2020 a review has confirmed that the use of CBD shows a significant decrease in scratching and symptoms of chronic itching. At the same time, other clinical studies have shown improvements in a number of skin conditions with CBD. These include uraemic and cholestatic pruritus, eczema, allergic and atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis.

On the other hand, the anti-inflammatory effect of CBD can be of great help in reducing likely triggers of eczema and psoriasis.

Antioxidant and Sebum-regulating Properties

A recent study, which focused on whether CBD could help treat oily skin, found that CBD had enormous potential. sebum regulatorIt interferes with the endocannabinoid system of the skin, reducing the production of sebum or oil, and therefore improving the health of the skin of people with oily skin and, above all, people suffering from acne.

"The endocannabinoid system (ECS) regulates multiple physiological processes, including skin cell growth and differentiation. Here, we explored the effects of the major non-psychotropic phytocannabinoid from Cannabis sativa, cannabidiol (CBD), on human sebaceous gland function and determined that CBD behaves as a highly effective sebostatic agent. Administration of CBD to cultured human sebocytes and human skin organ culture inhibited the lipogenic actions of several compounds, including arachidonic acid and a combination of linoleic acid and testosterone, and suppressed sebocyte proliferation through activation of transient receptor potential vanilloid-4 (TRPV4) ion channels. TRPV4 activation interfered with the prolipogenic ERK1/2 MAPK pathway and resulted in down-regulation of nuclear receptor-interacting protein-1 (NRIP1), which influences glucose and lipid metabolism, thereby inhibiting sebocyte lipogenesis. The CBD also exerted complex anti-inflammatory actions that were coupled to adenosine A2a receptor A2a-dependent up-regulation of tribulin homologue 3 (TRIB3) and inhibition of NF-κB signalling. Taken together, our findings suggest that, due to the combination of lipostatic, anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory effects, CBD has potential as a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of acne vulgaris."
