CBD Skin Care - What is Cannabidiol?

CBD skin cream

CBD skincare has been marketed to treat a range of skin conditions, from oily skin and acne, to wrinkles and signs of photoageing. But are these benefits true or is it just another marketing hype? Bove Health knows that CBD for skin is a super-ingredient, and here are the facts about CBD you need to know.

What is CBD?

When we talk about CBD (also called Cannabidiol) we refer to the non-psychoactive component of the Cannabis or Hemp plant. CBD is extracted in the form of resin or powder and is usually mixed with an oil such as hemp seed oil, which improves application and efficacy due to its fatty acids.

CBD oil in skin care products will not make you feel stoned, nor will they affect your state, because it does not have the same properties as those contained in the mind-altering Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) of marijuana, which is a psychotropic effect. It is extracted from the flowers and flowering tops of the Hemp plant, whose THC content is exceptionally low (often as low as 0.0%).

What is the difference between Hemp Oil, CBD and THC?

  • Hemp seed oil is an oil rich in Omega 3, which is obtained from pressing the seeds of the Hemp plant (also known as the Cannabis Sativa plant). These seeds do not contain calming cannabinoids and generally do not contain CBD.
  • Cannabidiol (CBD) is obtained from the leaves and flowers of hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.). This plant is rich in natural compounds known as Cannabinoids and undetectable levels of THC. CBD helps to restore overall balance in the body along with other benefits to our endocannabinoid system. CBD can be obtained from both Marijuana and Hemp plants. Only CBD obtained from industrial hemp plants is legal for cosmetic use in Spain.
  • THC is also found in the Cannabis plant and is the most well known compound, which is why in countries like Spain it is still illegal. It is intoxicating, which means it can make you feel "stoned", although it has multiple proven therapeutic effects.

Why is CBD good for the skin?

CBD calms skin reactivity (think red, inflamed and undernourished skin) by telling skin cells to behave more calmly and harmoniously.

Does CBD help acne-prone skin?

Acne-prone skin can often feel uncomfortable, so soothing and calming ingredients (this is where CBD comes in) are very likely to visibly reduce acne breakouts and the redness associated with acne breakouts.

Numerous studies have shown that CBD oil has calming benefits when applied to the skin. This makes CBD a perfect ingredient for acne-prone skin, while its calming benefits help reactive skin look and feel better.

Scientific research also shows that CBD has the potential to decrease excess sebum (oil) production, possibly due to its regulatory effect on sebum flow in the skin. Despite this encouraging news, most scientists studying CBD agree that more conclusive scientific studies are needed to confirm these initial results for CBD and acne-prone skin.

CBD for skin ageing and wrinkles

Because it comes from a plant, it's not surprising that the CBD oil also has antioxidant properties. The antioxidants in CBD are a topical form that help to diminish the visible signs of ageing. By counteracting free radical damage and reducing the appearance of inflamed skin. Cannabidiol skin care can help visibly diminish problems such as wrinkles, dull skin and reddish skin tone.

Of course, there are many other antioxidants that can make the same claims, so CBD is not the only or the "best" antioxidant to look for. Rather, it is just one of many to consider, and the more of these ingredients you provide your skin with, the better.

Can I use CBD skin care during pregnancy?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding and would like to use CBD skincare products, we strongly recommend that you consult with your doctor to discuss its use before, during and after pregnancy. Although CBD applied to the skin does not reach the bloodstream and therefore cannot reach the foetus, it is always a good idea to consult a specialist.

Adding CBD to your skincare routine

At Bove Health we offer multiple skin care products that contain CBD: our Facial Serum with Bakuchiol and CBD and our Anti-ageing cream with Niacidamine and CBDare just a few of them. Both products help prevent the signs of ageing by reducing skin reactivity, which is the underlying cause of skin ageing. The addition of 1% Bakuchiol in our Facial Serum treats the visible signs of ageing, such as fine lines, wrinkles and blemishes caused by photo-ageing.
