Skin care

CBD oil is marketed in skin care products, from acne to wrinkles. But is there likely to be any benefit, or is it just marketing hype? Here are the scientific facts about CBD that you need to know.

CBD has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-aging effects on our skin.

What is CBD oil?

CBD (also known as cannabidiol) is the non-toxic component of cannabis or hemp plants. CBD is extracted in powder form and is often mixed with an oil such as olive, hemp or coconut oil, which improves its application and efficacy, hence the name "CBD oil".
CBD skin care oil will not get you high because it does not have the mind-altering properties of the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content of marijuana. It is extracted from the flowers, leaves, stems or stalks of the hemp plant, whose THC content is exceptionally low (often so low that it cannot be detected by testing equipment).
It is also important to know that CBD oil is not the same as hemp seed oil, which is another great skin ingredient. The two are often marketed interchangeably, but CBD oil has a high concentration of cannabidiol, while hemp seed oil contains only trace amounts of cannabidiol, if any.
For products that claim to contain CBD, the FDA-regulated name that must appear on the ingredient label is cannabidiol (this regulated labelling is called the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients-INCI). All other alternative names that appear on ingredient labels, such as CBD-enriched hemp seed oil, may or may not mean that the product actually contains cannabidiol. In any case, to be 100% sure you can always ask the company for the specification of their product, it will be in their analysis.

CBD for acne skin

Research has firmly established that acne is an inflammatory condition. While there are multiple factors that trigger acne, we know that anything applied to the skin that can reduce inflammation and help calm it (that's where CBD comes in) is likely to visibly reduce breakouts, especially acne-related redness.
Numerous studies have shown that CBD oil has anti-inflammatory benefits when applied to the skin. This makes CBD a suitable ingredient for acne-prone skin, while its calming benefits help reactive skin look and feel better.
Research also shows that CBD has the potential to decrease excess sebum (oil) production, possibly due to its balancing effect on the skin's oil flow.
Despite this encouraging news, most scientists studying CBD agree that more conclusive scientific studies are needed to confirm these initial results.

CBD oil for wrinkles and anti-ageing

Since it comes from a plant, it is not surprising that CBD oil also has antioxidant properties. The antioxidants in CBD are one of the ways in which its topical use helps to diminish the visible signs of ageing. By counteracting free radical damage and reducing the appearance of inflammation, anti-ageing creams with CBD visibly diminish problems such as wrinkles, dullness and redness.
Of course, there are many other antioxidants that can make the same claims, so CBD is not the only or the "best" antioxidant to look for; rather, it is just one of many to consider, and the more of these ingredients you give your skin, the better.

CBD oil for sensitive skin

Another benefit of CBD oil is that it has been found to have significant calming properties. Its significant skin soothing and normalising effects can help minimise problems related to skin sensitivity, including redness and reactivity. Since all skin types are affected daily by environmental stressors, CBD's calming mechanism can help keep everyone's skin under control.

How to find the best skin care with CBD

With so many CBD skincare products available, you need to know what to look for to make sure you find the best CBD oil (or other types of CBD skincare). Here are some tips for buying CBD:
Make sure the ingredient list indicates "cannabidiol". As mentioned above, other terms are not compatible with INCI, nor is hemp seed oil or extract the same as CBD oil.
Many brands selling CBD skin products list the total cannabidiol content in milligrams, sometimes broken down by use. This is a good indicator that the CBD product is legitimate, although there is currently no consensus on how much CBD the skin needs per application; we only know that the skin has receptor sites for this ingredient that, when engaged, can disrupt the signals that cause the skin to act.
Ask the brand or check if they provide proof of third-party certification of purity and claimed amount of CBD to make sure you are getting what the label says.
Look for CBD skin care in a stable package.
Some brands advertise their CBD as "isolated", "full spectrum" or "broad spectrum". None of these terms are regulated, but they can be useful differentiators:
CBD isolate means pure CBD, without other cannabinoids or other natural substances such as flavonoids or terpenes.
Full-spectrum CBD means everything that is produced in the hemp plant along with CBD, including traces of THC and other cannabinoids such as CBG (cannabigerol) and antioxidant compounds.
Full-spectrum CBD means that there is no detectable THC. Traces of THC can be detected in full-spectrum CBD, but they must be less than 0.2% for it not to be considered active.
The bottom line: As long as it is extracted within the right parameters, CBD oil has benefits for the skin. Bovē Health is excited to see the research on the topical benefits of CBD oil continue to grow, and we anticipate that it will become a mainstay of many people's skincare routines.
